:no:An interesting story out of Australia this week reported on the health problems that many carers of family members can have themselves.
A study of 1000 Aussie carers by the charity Wesley Mission found that caring of loved ones came at a profound cost.
Its 'Keeping minds Well: Caring Till it Hurts' report found almost 90% of carers looking after a spouse or relative with a mental illness reported an adverse impact on their own physical or mental health.
Three out of four carers surveyed also said their role had negatively affected their relationship with family and friends, while 57% said their employment and finances had suffered as a consequence.
"They more often than not sacrificed their time, money and even their careers", said Wesley Mission chief executive the Rev Keith Garner.
"Their caring comes at a cost, with an an overwhelming number declaring that their caring experience as a child provided a lasting negative into adult life."
Rev Garner said the challenge was to better support cares and reduce the stigma associated with caring."This is a challenge for all mental health providers.
As a New Zealand resident carer of a family member myself, I would hope that mental health providers would heed such a message.

Alarming new research published in the journal Neurotoxicology and Teratology supports the emerging connection between glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonian disorders.
Published this month (April, 2012), the new study entitled "Glyphosate induced cell death through apoptotic and authophagic mechanisms," investigated the potential brain-damaging effects of herbicides, which the authors stated "have been recognized as the main environmental factor associated with neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease."

They found that glyphosate inhibited the viability of differentiated test cells (PC12, adrenal medula derived), in both dose-and-time dependent manners. The researchers also found that "glyphosate induced cell death via authophagy pathways in addition to activating apoptotic pathways."
Roundup herbicide is now a ubiquitous contaminant in our air, rain, groundwater, and food, making complete avoidance near impossible. A growing body of experimental evidence now indicates that it in addition to its neurotoxicity it also has the following.

Cannabis extract makes brain tumors shrink, halts growth of blood vessels...

Researchers in Spain have discovered that a cannabis extract makes brain tumors shrink by halting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumors with life. Cannabis has chemicals called cannabinoids, these are the chemicals that could effectively starve tumors to death, say the researchers.
The study was carried out at the Complutense University, Madrid, Spain.
The team used mice to demonstrate that the cannabinoids block vessel growth.
You can read about this latest research in the journal Cancer Research.
Apparently, the procedure is also effective in humans.
The Spanish team, led by Dr Manuel Guzmn, wanted to see whether they could prevent glioblastoma multiforme cancer from growing by cutting off its blood supply. Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most difficult cancers to treat - it seldom responds to any medical intervention, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
The scientists knew that cannabinoids will block the growth of blood vessels (to tumors) in mice - they wanted to find out whether the same thing would happen with humans.
The mice were given a cancer similar to the human brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). The mice were then given cannabinoids and the genes examined.
The genes associated with blood vessel growth in tumors through the production of a chemical called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) had their activity reduced.
Cannabinoids halt VEGF production by producing Ceramide. Ceramide controls cell death.
Dr Guzmn said: "As far as we know, this is the first report showing that ceramide depresses VEGF pathway by interfering with VEGF production."
They then wanted to see if this would also happen with humans.
They selected two patients who had glioblastoma multiforme and had not responded to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. The scientists took samples from them before and after treating them with a cannabinoids solution - this was administered directly into the tumor.
Amazingly, both patients experienced reduced VEGF levels in the tumor as a result of treatment with cannabinoids.
The researchers said that the results were encouraging. In order to be sure about their findings they need to carry out a larger study, they said.
Dr Guzmn said "The present findings provide a novel pharmacological target for cannabinoid-based therapies."

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is planning a serious shake up of the international drug code.

Up in the smoke; the ban on marijuana use in sports may soon be lifted, where it’s not proven to be a performance enhancer. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is planning a serious shake up of the international drug code.
The issue will be raised after Wednesday’s statement from the coalition of Australian sporting bodies, which said cannabis can’t be put on a par with human growth hormone or anabolic steroids and that the drug code must be reviewed.
At the moment, a substance appears on the WADA banned list if it meets the following criteria: it’s proven to be performance enhancing, it goes against the spirit of sport, or it’s dangerous to the health of athletes.
Marijuana qualifies as a forbidden drug under current rules, with sportsmen getting two-year bans if it’s found in their system, but the situation may soon change.
"There are those who believe our current criteria needs to be amended and that will be given appropriate consideration through this review process,” John Fahey, WADA President, told The Guardian newspaper. "Specifically to cannabis, I can only say to those, particularly in the football codes who have expressed concern that we're focusing on an area that really isn't about cheating in sport, I urge them to put a request up to WADA, which will be given to our list committee, who will examine it.”
"I won't express a view I'll simply say it will be thoroughly examined. There are some substances today that are banned in some sports, but not in others. That may well be an option they [the WADA banned-list committee] may wish to come to the board with in due course. But I won't pre-empt that, I'll let them decide without any influence from me," he added.
It is widely acknowledged that cannabis doesn’t give any advantage in fast-paced sports, but may prove helpful in disciplines like pistol shooting or golf where a steady hand is needed.
Weed-loving athletes will have to wait till November 2013 when WADA’s new code will be settled.

U-(Kiwipete says: Marijuana/cannabis may not be a performance enhancing drug as such, but it is probably the most insidious drug around because it undermines ambition and determination to succeed.

B)The pomegranate: It relieves stress and improves sex life - now it's nature's elixir of youth, claims study...
Elixir: A £2million study has found a daily dose of pomegranate juice could slow the ageing process of DNA.
It can help to prevent heart disease, relieve stress and has even been shown to improve your sex life.
And if that was not enough to convince you to try pomegranate, the fruit is now being hailed as the elixir of youth.
A £2million study has found a daily dose could slow the ageing process of DNA.
An extract of the whole fruit – including pith, peel and seeds – was given to 60 volunteers every day for a month in the form of a capsule.
Researchers monitored the activity of chemicals in their bodies compared with those who took a placebo.
They found a significant decrease in a marker associated with cell damage, which can cause impaired brain, muscle, liver and kidney function as well as ageing effects on the skin.
